Sandwiches on Sunday for the Homeless
Formerly known as Sandwich Ministry, has existed here at St. Cecilia for more than 25 years. Many years ago the ministry was suspended because of cost and volunteer issues. We re-activated the ministry in 2016 and were doing lunches for 150 homeless on a weekly basis, pre-COVID. As we have come back to ministry in person, this has been one of our first ministries to begin serving in person again. We are currently making 40-50 lunches each week and delivering them to those who serve the homeless in downtown Houston.
When we began again in 2016 we had three amazing volunteers who took on leadership and worked together to manage organizing the three sets of volunteers. The leaders order what food we need each week from HEB & organize who: 1) picks up food on Fridays and drops it at the Community Center kitchen to be ready for Sunday, 2) who comes to make the lunches on Sunday and leave them ready in the kitchen and 3) who picks them up on Monday and delivers them to the agency downtown to be handed out to those in need.
Last Spring when our leadership needed to step down, Ashley Gomila, stepped up to take on leadership. She has done an amazing job, however, with her taking on the position of Athletic Director at our School this Fall, it has been more difficult and SHE NEEDS HELP! We would like to go back to having 3 people leading so that the burden does not fall on one person. This can be managed remotely. It is working with Ashley to manage volunteers and split up responsibilities. Feel free to communicate with Ashley Gomila, gomila.ashley@gmail.com or Karen Ann Martin karenann@saintcecilia.org. Thank you for considering serving.
